Michelle's run 12.31.12

Time: 10 minute run

Well I got a run in before the New Year.  I had really been feel down today (is there such a thing as pre-baby blues?) and had decided that I didn't want to go for a run after all.  Well, Michael convinced me to at least run up and down the street to maybe help me feel better.  I don't feel completely better, but my spirits are lifted and I have some more energy.  Hopefully tomorrow I will do an actual run.

I was able to do another 30 minute run.  It was a cold run, but only my fingers were really cold during the run.  I had planned on trying to wear my running tights, but I couldn't find them.  Maybe Michael hid them so I would try to wear them in public. :)  Seriously, I need to find those tights!  I love them.  I just wore a bootcut pair of pants instead.

Went to the doctor yesterday and I had only gained 2 pounds in the last month.  Plus my blood pressure was excellent.  I told them it was because I was on Christmas Break and they laughed, thinking I was kidding.

It's a miracle I ended up doing anything. I had a run all planned out.  However, when I got in my car, it wouldn't start.  I'm thinking the battery is dead, but I have to wait until Michael gets home to find out for sure.  So running was out.  I just can't run in our ultra hilly neighborhood anymore.  Then I decided to take Murray on a walk, well as soon as we went outside it started raining.  We made it about 5 minutes.  So, I ended up just using my weights in my living room to do an arm workout and then some lunges and other Jillian Michael-ish moves.  After all of the previous stuff I was also getting pressed for time (my mother-in-law was driving up).  Well at least I did something and I can feel a little better about all of the sugar I have been eating lately!

I am so happy that I was able to run for 30 minutes without walking.  I felt pretty good (as good as you can probably feel running with an extra 10+ lbs) and was happy to get some exercising in.  The weather was also great.

Michelle's run 12.17.12

20 minutes walk/run

I was starting to think I wouldn't run again (during this pregnancy).  Last week was so crazy at work, I did not get home before dark 1 day.  Then I was exhausted Saturday and Sunday it rained ALL DAY (plus, I was still exhausted).  It took all of the energy I had to get out there today.  It definitely wasn't pretty after taking a whole week off.  My legs were letting me know how mad they were.  I didn't wear my band, so my lower abs hurt too.  However, I did something and actually had more energy when it was over.  That may have been some of the exhaustion problem, I hadn't exercised.  Hopefully the next couple of weeks will be better for working out (weather permitting).

p.s. heartburn adds a new challenge to running as well!

Mysti's Workout 12-09-2012

Couch to 5k - Week 5 Day 1 30 minutes and 2.5 miles I bought my first pair of fitted long running pants. I'm determined to learn to enjoy cold weather running. Today was a good test / start with weather in the middle 40's and windy. With my pants and long sleeve shirt I was nice and toasty - almost too warm at the end. I also felt good the entire run.

Michelle's Run 12.8.12

Time: 20 minutes

I got into looking at fabric for the baby's room this morning and didn't leave myself much time to run.  I was able to squeeze 20 minutes in.  I drove to the hospital near our house and ran in the flat neighborhood around it.  I felt good the whole run, my legs were just a little stiff in the beginning from having almost a whole week off from running.  No excuse for the lack of running, just Christmas shopping and being lazy!  I couldn't believe that I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts in December!

Couch to 5k - Week 4 Day 3; 25 minutes and 2 miles. It was a slow run, but it was a run. Think I'm still recovering from a week of very sleepless nights due to Sam's horrible cold and cough that woke up the whole house. He is better now and slept through the night last night.

I went back to cardio dance this week. I feel like I am much bigger this week.  I do feel kind of silly dancing around to "sexy and I know it" when I am 21weeks pregnant! Hahaha.  I had a harder time with the class... Not really pregnancy related, but the arches of my feet were hurting.  It was strange.

Time: 25 minutes (run/walk)

Michael and I went for a run/walk this evening.  I had to walk up the big hill and down some of it.  Then there was another smaller hill that I had to walk when I got to the top.  The end of the run was flat and I felt good.  My back and stomach were giving me minor problems, but once I stopped the irritation stopped (which is the key, my doctor says).  Michael was patient to run so slowly with me.  He of course did another lap around the neighborhood after I finished.  It was nice to have someone to talk to.

Michelle's workout 11.29.12

Cardio Dance Class

A few months ago (before I knew I was pregnant), I bought a groupon for 10 fitness classes for $30.  I hadn't used any of them yet, but decided that I needed to.  I picked a cardio dance class because it looked like it wouldn't have much floor work.  The class was a lot of fun and there was just a little ab floor work the last 2 minutes or so, I just stretched.  It was fun to do something different and I get to go 9 more times! 

Of course after the class traffic was terrible, the dog got on my nerves, and the chicken I was planning to use for dinner was still frozen.  But what can you do?

Mysti's Workout 11-28-2012

Couch to 5k - Week 4 Day 1: 23 minutes; 2 miles. Very excited! It felt like a real run and that I was getting back into shape again! 6 months post baby / post c-section is pretty good despite having felt down on myself. I left the house as soon as John got home from work 5:15pm and it was so dark when I was finishing up 2 miles. I skipped the last walking part and 5 minute cool down - walking is boring anyways ;)

Michelle's Run 11.26.12

Run: 10 minute
Walk: 10 minute

I didn't take my watch or ipod with me, but I'm guessing that I ran for about 10 minutes and walked for about 10.  I was happy to get something in before it got dark and on a nicer weather day.  (I think it's supposed to rain tomorrow.)

I went to the doctor today and I had gained around 8 pounds in a month!  Of course that month included Halloween and Thanksgiving, but it gave me all the more motivation to run this evening.  I'm hoping it wasn't really 8 pounds... (maybe bloated, water, etc.)

I had been weighing myself every Wednesday, just to keep track, but I hadn't done that in the last few weeks.  I need to get back on that.  It's a good weigh for me to remember that I can't just eat whatever I want. 

Of course, I also tried to convince myself that maybe since I was running consistently, I gained some muscle...haha.

Michelle's Run 11.23.12

Distance: 3 miles!!!  (then a 3 minute cool down walk)

I ran 3 miles this morning without stopping.  I felt pretty good the whole time, although I was happy to walk once I reached the 3 mile mark.  I didn't have much ab stretching pain.  I'm starting to get used to the much slower pace and just tried to be thankful that I can still run that distance halfway through my pregnancy. The cooler temperatures also helped.

Now it's time to shower, go to the Razorback game, and then find out if my running partner is a boy or a girl!

After two days in the car, I was in need of a run.  The weather in Arkansas was perfect.  My legs felt dead at the beginning of the run, but after walking for 6 minutes, my second running set was a lot better.  I'm  hoping to run a few times this week while I'm in Arkansas, since it's flat and I'm not working.

Couch to 5k - Repeated Week 3 Day 1: 1.75 miles, 23 minutes. It has not been a good week for working out and eating; but it has been a very fun week. Tue. - Tue. Vacation !! Tue. - Thur. my parents were in town for a visit while John was on a buisness trip. Fri. - Mon. I surprised John for his 30th birthday with a trip to Oklahoma to watch the OSU Cowboys and the Oklhoma City Thunder. We had a great time, he was totally surprised and did wonderful with a 6 month old in tote.

I have been really lazy/tired this weekend.  Friday I didn't get home until almost dark.  Yesterday, we had a few things to do, but a 2 hour nap definitely took up a large part of the afternoon.  The same with today.  After my nap I didn't feel like running, but I decided that I at least needed to go on a walk.  So I took Murray with me on a walk around the neighborhood.

It was a little chilly to start, but I warmed right up.  The beginning of my week was really busy and left me exhausted!  I was happy to make it home at a decent time and get a run in before the sun went down.  It also helps my mood that I saw my precious baby today.  He/she is perfect!

Michelle's Run 11.11.12

Time: 30 minute run (without stopping!); 5 minute walk (cool down)

I felt so great during this run.  Seriously, like I wasn't pregnant, except I knew I was going slower.  Here are what I think factored into the good run:

1. I ran a flat route, so less round ligament pain
2. The weather was great
3. I wore the Beband.  It probably isn't made for running, but it gave a little extra support. (even though it caused me to sweat more)

I didn't even have music or anything.  I just ran. 

I guess I will try to run the flat route more often, it means I have to walk along a section of a busier road (not on it, but in the grass next to it...there isn't a sidewalk), but it isn't too bad.

Mysti's Workout 11-11-2012

Couch to 5k - Week 3 Day 1: 1.35 miles, 17 minute. I did not complete the entire run, suppose to be 26 minutes. It has been raining off and on all day, and I thought I picked a good time to go as it was just misting. At about a mile it went from misting to sprinkling and I thought this is still not to bad I can probably make 2 miles. Well, then it flat out started raining and I headed back to the house. I walked in the house and John said "are you motivated or crazy" to which I replied "definitely crazy".

Michelle's run 11.8.12

Distance: 1 mile run; .5 mile walk

This wasn't good.  I didn't feel like running, but knew that I wouldn't be able to run tomorrow.  So, I decided to go.  I changed clothes and put my shoes on.  Every time I put my running shoes on, Murray gets so excited.  So, I feel bad not taking him.  Michael had told me the last time I took him, that I probably didn't need to anymore, but I felt bad, so I harnessed him up.  Well, it was a mistake.  We started running and I felt good.  However, we saw a dog.  When we see other dogs I have to pick up my pace to get him to concentrate on running and not the dog.  Well, he still pulls and lunges at the other dog, so I have to use my strength to pull him back.  I'm also always afraid that he will trip me.  Then, we go a little farther and two men are walking down the street on the uphill.  I know that I need to run past them, for the same reasons as before.  So I am trying to run faster uphill while he is pulling on me.  By the time we got to the top I was exhausted.  We walked the downhill and after I got my breath back to normal we started running again.  Then we saw TWO more dogs.  Ugh!  So, for the third time the situation repeated itself.  I barely got past the people before I had to stop.  By this point I was breathing ok, but in pain.  (I'm guessing my round ligament joints.)  I just walked straight home and didn't even finish my route. 

I should have just left him at home.  I don't know why I am cursed with such a terrible running dog.  That was one of the reasons I really wanted a dog, I wanted a running partner.  But instead, I got a dog that tried to pull my arm off.  I don't get so frustrated normally, but when running is already a bigger challenge, his behavior sends me over the edge.  (Not to mention the hormones!)

This is probably the longest post for a 1 mile run ever.  It's not even that exciting, but I needed to write this to remind me in the future that even though he wants to go on the run...he just can't until May.  (Maybe this will motivate me to go on more walks on my non-running days, because walking I think I can handle with him....just not running.)

I tried out a cardio workout on the OnDemand.  It was ok.  At least I did something that kept me moving for 30 minutes.  It hasn't been ideal running weather.  Chilly and cloudy.  I just need to suck it up!  (And get more long sleeve running shirts)

Now I am ready to sit on the couch the rest of the night!  haha.

Time: 28 minute run; 2 minute walk

I got to enjoy some extra hour of sleep and still got a run in before church.  I walked part of an uphill and part of the downhill.  My ab/stomach muscles hurt a little, but not too bad.  It was much easier to get into my breathing today.  I felt good for most of the run (even though I was going at a glacial pace). 

I'm feeling good about how many times I ran/worked out this past week.  I'm hoping to keep it up!

Time: 20 minutes run, 5 minute walk

Today was not as good as Wednesday.  The first half of the run was terrible.  I had to stop a couple of times because I felt some cramping and it took me a while to get my breathing right.  However, starting at 10 minutes in, I felt a lot better and ran the rest with relative ease.  Maybe that is what pregnancy running will look like for me, the first 10 minutes are torture, but we're good after that!

The weather was perfect for running.  It was 60s and sunny.  Murray and I ran around the neighborhood before the Trick or Treating started.  I decided to run uphill and then walk downhill, which was better for my stomach muscles.

I am 16 weeks today and still able to run for 20 minutes and uphill! 

Mysti's Workout 10-31-2012

Couch to 5k - Week 1 Day 2: 30 minutes 2.25 miles. WooHoo, Sam typically gets up between 5:30-6:00, takes a bottle, plays till about 7:30-8:00 and then takes a nap for about an hour. My plan was to get up with Sam, wake up, stretch, eat breakfast, run before John left for work, put Sam down for his morning nap and then take a shower. Well, that is exactly what we did!! He is still sleeping and giving me some time to blog, watch the Today Show and finish getting ready for an exciting first Halloween. Happy Halloween - Be Safe!! Hope Michelle's class is not too hyper today.

I tried out a full body prenatal yoga workout that was On Demand.  It was a little boring.  I didn't fell like I was really working out, but I guess it was nice to stretch.  Will need to try to do something a little more cardio tomorrow.

Mysti 10-28-2012

Frustrated, So just ignore my rambling. A bad shopping trip pushed me over the edge yesterday!! The last year has been very exciting, but defiantly has brought on some changes and unfamiliarity in regards to my body. I don't want to say I look horrible or feel horrible. However, I will say I don't look amazing or feel amazing. I looked back through blog posts and was excited to see numerous posts for June and July; good reminder that exercising post pregnancy is possible. The first question that comes to mind is...Can I be a busy working Mom and still find time to exercise? However, that is really not the problem. I still find plenty of time for TV, Pinterest and Facebook. I think it is more about getting disciplined again vs settling at my new weight and size. So not to scare Michelle in this post pregnancy blog :) My new weight is only about 10-12 pounds higher and 1 pants size larger. Not a huge traumatizing difference. I know it would just take a little bit of motivation, but for some reason since returning to work my motivation has been zero. BUT, I do not want to settle as much for my mental health as for my physical health. With all of that said - I'm done being lazy!! I hope my feelings today stay with me. ______________ My new hope is to start running again - at least 3 days a week - most of the time, eat a little better, drink only one can of Dr. Pepper a day, lose the 10 pounds I put on during pregnancy and feel more energetic. If I return to my pre pregnancy pants size great - If not that is ok to as having a baby understandably changes ones body.

I didn't take a watch or iPod with me, but I probably walked for 5 min and ran for 15.  The first few min of running sucked, but it got better.  I don't know if I said this before, but I think I am going to have to get a belly support band. Running downhill is kind of painful. I'm hoping it gets better, but I doubt it.

Michelle's run 10.18.12

Time: 20 minute run + 10 minute walk

I felt pretty terrible for the first 10 minutes of the run, but after that I felt a lot better. I had told myself that I just needed to run for 15 minutes, but ended up being able to do 20 just fine.  The only trouble was running downhill.  I had a cramping feeling in my lower abs... Probably from the stretched muscles and the bouncing that happens when going downhill. Not sure what to do about it, it's impossible to avoid hills in Chattanooga.  Maybe a belly band? I just don't feel like I'm big enough to need one of those yet.

Michelle's Run 10.14.12 and News

Well, it's been 2 weeks since I ran.  BAD!  However, when we were in London, we walked EVERYWHERE.  So, I don't feel so bad. 

Since I hadn't ran in a couple of weeks, I took it slow.  The weather was nice, and there was a little breeze. 

Now for some news.... (in case anyone besides Mysti, Michael, and I read this)

I am 13 weeks pregnant with our first baby!  I am so excited.

What does this mean for running?

Well, I am extremely tired, but I have been trying to keep it up.  I have had some episodes of back pain though.  When we went to Arizona a few weeks ago, I came back and had pain for about a week.  I was fine in London, but Friday night I cleaned a bath tub and it started hurting again.  It bothered me a little during the run, but nothing too bad.

My goal is to run as long as possible and as I get more energy, become more consistant.  I have read that that is the key to exercising when pregnant.  I may to hire someone to call or come by my house and make me go!  The main reason I am wanting to keep up running is for a few reasons:

1. It's more interesting than walking
2. I feel good after I run and feel better about myself/body
3. I want to control my weight gain

So far I haven't gained any weight.  I am actually down a pound than I was when I initially got pregnant.  I was super healthy for about a week and a half after finding out (no soda, no coffee, little dessert, etc).  However, that ended quickly and now I eat more like I did before.... just no lunch meat or soft cheese.  I also don't eat any more than I did before, which is probably the important part.  So far it's working out, I would like to only gain about 20 lbs.  (I'm shooting for a small (but healthy) baby.)

I ran the 5k a couple of weeks ago and would like to run one more while pregnant.  That may be a lofty goal, but I think it would be fun to see the looks on people faces when I pass them with a belly.  hahaha.  (I would probably only pass the walkers, but still!)

Race for the Cure 5k 9.30.12

I ran in the local Race of the Cure 5k yesterday.  It was an afternoon race, which was weird.  Luckily, the weather was nice.  I definitely didn't get in a good time, but I ran the whole time and felt good at the end.  I especially felt good because so many people walked it.  :)

Mysti's 9-26 & 9-27

9-26-12 Dana and I walked for an hour yesterday morning. Not sure on distance - we just wondered around the neighborhood. 9-27-12 I ran 1/2 milk, walked - caught my breath, ran 1/2 mile. How this change in a year. It was about this time last year that I was around 10 miles and now barely surviving a mile. :) Ob la di, ob la da, life goes on ...

Time: 5 minute run, 5 minute walk, 20 minute run

It seems like a strange way to break up the run and it definitely wasn't on purpose.  I started running and feeling pretty good, but then I got some side pains, so I stopped and walked up the hill.  Then I started running again and was able to run for 20 minutes.  I felt pretty great by the end.  I actually felt myself smile at the end, which I haven't done in a while.

This run was from a week ago.  I ran about a mile and a half Thursday night, then we were in Arizona from Friday-Monday night late.  I wanted to get one run in in Arizona, but it didn't happen.  We did do some walking at the Grand Canyon and through the airports though. :)

I ran a quick 1.5 miles before cooking dinner Friday night.  It wasn't the best run, but I was proud that I actually ran on Friday evening.  I wish I would have ran yesterday, but I'm going to try to get out today.  The weather has been so nice!

Well, here is to something! John, Sam and I walked yesterday morning and this evening. I tried to drink more water and less Dr.Pepper. Yesterday, I did about 1.5 hours of yard work.

I actually got up and ran on a Saturday.  Mysti and I had just talked about how we both have no excuse for not working out on the weekend, other than laziness.  It also helps that it was a cooler day!

I ran 2 miles this evening.  It was still warm, but it wasn't too bad.  I'm about to give up on the idea that it's going to get cooler.  I keep thinking, "Any day now..." but it's still close to 90 at 7:00pm. 

I did feel good while running today.  I ran the whole 2 mile loop without stopping (even the hill).  I even felt like I was going a little faster than I have been lately.  Yay!  I hope I can keep it up.

I ran 2 miles yesterday morning.  (ok, it was more like noon)  It was starting to get a little warm, so I stopped at 2 miles, although I felt better than I had in a while.  I even ran up "the hill."

I'm hoping to either run or do a Jillian Michael's video this evening while Michael is busy with his Fantasy Football Draft.

So, I haven't exercised in over a week!  WHAT?  I know, it's sad.  I had been busy sorting, packing, and running a yard sale for Michael's mom.  That has consumed my weekends.  Last week, I just didn't feel like it.  So, hopefully this week is better.  This run was hard because I hadn't run in a week and it was still pretty hot and humid out.

I thought I could be a super hero and do both a Jillian Michael's workout AND a 20 minute (at least) run.  Well, I only got in a 15 minute run. My legs were dead running up the hill (about 5 minutes into my route) and after that it was hard to go the next 10 minutes.  90+ temps never help either!

My parents are in town, which is why there has been a lack of running, but we did go on a 2 mile mountain hike today.  The weather was not, but we were shaded the whole time... and we had great views!  They are leaving tomorrow morning, so I'm hoping to get back to running!

I didn't start running until 9:45 this morning (Hallelujah for no more summer school!) and it was a bit warm.  Not really that warm if you were just walking, but once my body warmed up it was hot!  But I made it.  I can't believe I didn't run more last week.  I think it was a heat, stress, tired combo.  Saturday we went to Michael's mom's house and helped her sort through 25 years of stuff... while it wasn't really a workout I was moving stuff most of the day.  I don't have an excuse for yesterday. 

Here's hoping this week is better exercise wise.  I HAVE to get in a habit before school starts back up.

Mysti 07-11-2012

I have not workout out since last Wed. We went out of town over weekend, Monday was cleaning and laundry and then Tue was Sam's 2 month shots. Just as I was about to go run tonight Sam spit up all over John and had a really bad diaper. On the bright side I've lost 4 more pounds and my jeans fit again, just a little still.

Michael has started a new work schedule.  He works from 11:30-8:00pm.  I work from 8am-1pm.  That leaves a lot of time for me to get things done.  I find myself running out of excuses not to workout... :)  It was too hot to run, so I did a JM video instead.  I tried not to be lazy and do everything the best I could (sometimes I'm guilty of only halfway doing stuff...oops!)

AJC Peachtree Road Race 7.4.12


Yesterday, Michael and I ran the Peachtree Road Race 10k.  It was a hot run!  (As you can probably tell by the redness in my face...even 30 minutes after finishing!)  Although I had to walk up a lot of the hills, my time wasn't awful.  1:09:33.  I didn't even sprint at the end because I wasn't sure where the end was!  I also didn't know it was going to be so hilly.  I think if I ran it again, I would be better prepared.  I also wouldn't get surgery the week before.  However, I think the fact that this race is on July 4th will always make it a tough race, weather-wise.

What was really neat about the race was all of the people!  There were 60,000 participants!  Then there were spectators all along the streets cheering people on.  Some people came in costume, some carried flags the whole way, some people handed out beer and shots instead of water!  It was an experience.  I told Michael I didn't think I would do it again, but we'll see!

Michelle's run 7.1.12

Distance: 1.5 miles

An easy, short run in 95 degree temps!  I decided at 8:40pm that I needed to run today.  We have had record high heat (yesterday it was 106) lately.  But, I am running a 10k Wednesday, so I knew I needed to go for a run.  It was still hot out, but the sun was setting, so it didn't feel so hot.  I was happy to be able to run 1.5 miles less than a week after my surgery.  It wasn't fast or pretty, but I made it. 

While I was running an old man said "It's too hot to run!"  I shouted back, "I know.  I'm crazy!" 

I'm hoping to get one more run in before Wednesday.  I am nowhere near prepared.  I think my strategy is going to be to take it a mile and a half at a time.

Michelle's walk 6.28.12

1 mile walk with Michael. 

I had a minor surgery Tuesday and have not been feeling up to exercising.  The walk tonight was my way of easing back into it.  I will try to do some modified Jilian Michael's tomorrow and then run Saturday. 

Surgery the week before a 10k was probably not my best decision!  Plus, it's going to be close to 100 degrees that day! Eeek!

Mysti's Workout 06-21-2012

1 Hour of Your Shaped Evolved 2012 Yay !! I bought the Game and tried it out for the first time today. My wonderfully "laid back" baby didn't interrupted one time. :):) (Joke between Michelle and I) I turned on the game at 12:15 and started the game about 12:45 - a little delay do to diaper and fighting his nap. Overall, I really enjoyed the game: quick to start working out, good mix of workouts and some fun games and dance classes. The AB workouts kicked my butt. Including: slow and fast mountian climber, plank, basic crunches and a couple others I don't remember the names. PS, I planned to run last night, but a hot relaxing bath it what happened during that time. :) Just too tired to run.

Yesterday Murray and I went for a 55 minute run.  I was supposed to run 5.5 miles this past weekend, but with traveling it didn't happen.  However, yesterday Murray really needed to get some energy out.  He had been cooped up in the hotel room for too long.  So we went on a run around the little town where we were staying.  It was warm, but there was a breeze most of the time.  I had thought about stopping after 30 minutes, but I figured it was run 55 minutes (close enough to 5.5 miles) now or running it in my hilly neighborhood later in the week while I was also working all day.  It seemed like a good idea to keep going.  I am proud of myself for running that long on vacation and without music! (Murray also did well.)

3.5 mile walk

This past Sunday, Michael and I went to Cumberland Island, GA.  It's a small island that very few people live on.  (It's mostly a national park.)  You take a ferry to get there and then you have to walk to the beach (no life guard either).  We ended up walking about 3.5 miles around the island to see different parts of the park.  We had a great time and were active the whole time we were there! The only bad part was the mosquitoes!

45 Minutes of Kinect: Your Shape Evolves Squats, lunges, cardio boxing. I could feel the lunges from yesterday. Also, I was reading about the 2012 version (Dana has first version)and it has floor activites like push-ups / sit-ups that the one I trying out doesn't have. The lack of ab workouts was my main concern. So....Looks like I might purchase the new version. I have a Target and Walmart gift card left from baby showers. I think it is appropriate that I spend it on me, not diapers.:)

Mysti's Workout 06-18-2012

1) Kinect: Your Shape Fitness Evolved 2012 I'm thinking about purchasing this Kinect game and my friend Dana let me borrow to test it out first. I had the game turned out for about 45 minutes; however, not all of that was working out. I'm still on the fence about the purchase. Positives: had a post pregnancy plan, cardio, toning, seemed to be effective workouts. Negatives: didn't find anything (yet) that really worked my stomach area and take a little while to start up. 2) Week One - Day One Couch to 5k I had downloaded the free iPhone app to test out the program and liked it. I now have the full version and am going to start at the beginning. (I'm a little OCD). Just for Fun... Mommy and Sam Get Back into Shape Purchase

I got up and ran this morning!  Woo hoo!  I started my run at 6:30 and was able to run 2 miles and get a shower in before leaving my house at 1:30. 

We are leaving tomorrow for South Georgia.  I don't know how much running will happen.  If I don't get my long run in on the trip, I'll have to do it next week.  5.5 miles... eek!

I hadn't really planned on a workout today.  After a not so great day and not feeling the best about my looks/body today, I decided I needed to do something.  So I did a Jilian Michaels DVD.  I can't say I was super into it or tried my best, but something is better than nothing!

I'm wanting to run tomorrow, but I'm working all week...so I don't know how I will get it in with the heat.

Mysti 06-11-2012

Couch to 5k / 1.62 Miles: I wanted to start something structured so I went with the Couch To 5k App. It gave me some structure without having to think / plan my workout. Not sure what my running will look like in over the next few months. I would like to start training for a Half Marathon again - I think I was up to 8 Miles when I was 6 week prego and my back went out. However, I have no idea how I would be able to work full time, be a good wife and mother and find time for long runs. Any Tips ?? Also...Did some pelvic and leg lifts. Not sure how I am going to get my stomach back to normal. My c-section left my stomach looking like I had a really bad tummy tuck. Any Tips ??

I did it!  I ran 5 miles this afternoon.  It was sprinkling, but that kept the heat down.  Although, it was really humid.  I stopped at mile 2 to get a drink of water and go to the bathroom.  Then I stopped at mile 4 for a few seconds to catch my breath.  I even ran "the hill" twice!

Only 2 more long runs before the Peachtree.  It's not going to be pretty, but I feel confident I'll finish.

Jilian Michael's 30 day shred: week 3 segment

I got back from Savannah late Tuesday.  Wednesday and Thursday I presented at a literacy conference.  I thought I would get a workout in both of those days, but I just didn't.  I was tired from the trip and the conference.  Yesterday I also had to take 5 doses of vitamin D (per dr. orders) and it really messed with me.  Today I felt better, but didn't get a chance to run before it got hot out.  So, I went with good ole' Jilian!  I have to run 5 miles this weekend.... I haven't decided if it will be tomorrow or Sunday.

I was in Savannah for 4 days and I managed to squeeze in one run!  I ran 2 miles around Forsyth Park.  It was sooo beautiful.  The sidewalk was also shaded, so it stayed cooler.  If I lived in Savannah I would run there every day!  My friend Erika ran the first lap with me.  It was nice to have some company and chat on the run.  The second lap I ran solo.  I ran it pretty hard since I knew I was only going to get 2 miles in.  I felt great and loved the change of scenery!  I wanted to run another day, but it just didn't work out.  Oh well, running at all on vacation is an improvement for me!

Mysti 06-08-2012

2 Mile Walk/Run. I am slowly but surely getting back in the grove. Today, I tested out my new apps MapMyRun and iHeartRadio. I hate to love my iPhone. Loved both apps - so nice to have something to track and store my workouts. However, I heard emails, phone calls and Facebook posts come through and I don't like to be that connected. Love - Hate. Now Michelle knows why I didn't answer her call - I was in the middle of my workout and not breathing very easily.

2 Mile Walk I was able to get another walk / run in this morning. John is home this week so I've been able to go without Sam. Which has allowed me to add in some running. I did not buy a jogging stroller because I wanted my running time to be my alone time. So I will have to change my running time to early morning or evening. Sam usually eats about 5 am, but we go back to sleep for about 2 more hours...So,most likely nights right now.

2 Mile Walk I have not been able to start walking / running like I wanted due to an abscessed tooth and emergency root canal last week. :( Nevertheless, I walked this morning and even attempted to run. I ran three different times throughout the 2 miles. It was very minimal; however, felt great!! I almost feel human again!!

Michelle's run 6.1.12

So, this was a really crazy run.  I started off really well and even tried a different neighborhood.  It was mostly downhill, which was bad because I think I went too fast.  I also ran along one of the busiest streets in Chattanooga for about a 1/2 mile.  There were sidewalks, but it was weird because so many cars passed me.  A little over 2 miles in I hit a wall.  I just couldn't go anymore.  I was running in a flat area, but it was hot and little shade.  I was also thirsty and didn't have any water with me.  When I got to mile 3 I had to walk back to my house.  (about .6 miles) I had a gatorade bottle waiting for me in the driveway.  After a few drinks, I was determined to finish the last 1.5 miles.  It wasn't pretty, but I finished.

I was having so much trouble I don't know how I am going to run the whole 6.2 mile Peachtree in a month or the 5 miles I have scheduled for next weekend for that matter!

Murray and I went on a hot over 89 degree run.  My legs were a little tight to begin with, but I ended strong. Murray did not end strong, I was practically dragging him at the end!

It's very rare that I like my running outfit.  I usually just find a shirt and shorts.  My biggest concern is usually if I have a white sports bra so I can wear a lighter colored shirt.  However, today I was liking my outfit. 


I love this running skirt that I got at TJ Maxx.  The shirt is just a white dry-fit shirt from Wal-Mart.  It's actually the shirt I wore in the Color Run.  All of the color fell off, so I decided to keep it!

This was my first treadmill run in well over a year!  It was just too hot to run outside, so we went to Michael's work and ran on the treadmills in their fitness center.  There was only one other lady in there.  I was fairly happy with the time since I haven't ran 4 miles in a while and even though it was inside, it was still quite warm.

My brother got married this past weekend in Springfield, MO.  I actually was able to squeeze a 2 mile run in on the big day!  We stayed at my now SIL's apartment, so I ran around a neighborhood nearby.  It was pretty flat and easy to navigate...nothing running through neighborhoods here!

I'm Back...Hopefully !!

2 mile Walk Samuel was born May 10, 2012 @ 7:35am. He was 6 lb and 4 ozs. Now that Samuel is here and pregnancy is over, I hope to start running again. Samuel was born via c-section; therefore the restart of running will be a little longer than hoped. I am going to start with walking for these first couple of weeks and just see how I feel as the weeks go by. Good news is that my doctor is not requiring me to wait until my 6 week check up - suggested about 3 weeks of recovery and then starting very slow.

This was a tough one.  I hadn't worked out since last Thursday.  My weekend was busy and it rained, then this is the last week of school, so it's been chaotic.  However, I knew if I didn't run today I would get one in this week. 

We are leaving for Missouri tomorrow after and won't be back until LATE Sunday.  I'm hoping to run Saturday (the only non-traveling day), but we will see.

Michelle's Run 5.10.12

Last night I ran a quick 20 minutes while dinner was in the oven.  I felt great the whole run.  I even ran the whole way up this killer hill by my house (I had never ran all the way up before)!  I may have done a celebratory fist pump at the top. :)

I have also been doing some Jillian Michael's workouts.  (Last Friday, Sunday, and Wednesday).  So, even though I haven't ran much, I'm not a complete slacker!

In more exciting news....  Mysti had her baby boy yesterday!  I'm sure she'll be back to posting her runs next week. :)  I haven't seen him in person, but his pictures are overwhelmingly adorable!

Bill Gregory Healthcare Classic 5k

Yesterday I ran the Bill Gregory Healthcare Classic 5k in Dalton.  We had a little registration drama when we first got there.  (I thought Michael had registered me and he thought I registered myself.)  However, we were able to get it straightened out right on time.  The humidity was brutal!  It was also a really hilly course.  I actually wasn't even that thrilled to run.  I thought I would do so terrible.  I hadn't been able to run as much as I would like and my last few runs hasn't gone well.  There was a fairly big crowd so it was hard to see Michael.  I had to walk about mile 2.5 and I didn't know how I was going to finish.  I just knew I was going to get a 35 minute time.  Then I got a glimpse of Michael!  I knew if he was within sight I wasn't doing too bad.... so I picked it up again.  When I got to the very end I sprinted with a girl.  She got me by a hair!

My official time was 31:30.  However, I would say it was more like 31 or a little less because we started near the back and had to walk a bit to get to the start.  Oh well, it is a MUCH better time than I expected.  It could have been a PR depending on when I actually started. 

I'm happy with the race and I am so glad that I ran it after all!

I tried out Pure Barre with a teacher from my school.  I ejoyed the class.  It was a little weird and silly at times, but I felt it was a workout and I loved that the place is sooo close to my house.

I decided to run yesterday morning before church.  It was a terrible run.  I had to stop and walk several times.  I am running a 5k this weekend, and I am not prepared at all!  I hope I can run better Saturday.

I forgot to blog about yoga, then I tried to post about the Saturday run, but blogger was not cooperating.  Hopefully this works!

Today I ran 3.5 miles.  The weather was a little cooler and it was really windy.  Murray ran with me for the first 1.5 and then he got put back in the house when he started barking at a kid on a scooter.  ugh!  I didn't run/workout much last week.  It was an emotionally exhausting week and I had several after school work obligations.  This week looks a lot better.  We have state testing, I guess they feel the teachers should have a break too...plus no grading!!

I had hoped for 3 miles and maybe also some Jillian Michaels, but today was the first day back from Spring Break.  The alarm went off WAY too early.  I almost settled for no run at all.... but I remembered my new running skirt!  I took it for a cruise around the block.  I love it.  The shorts that are attached don't ride up and it was quite comfortable.  I don't know if it's ideal for longer runs, but 2 miles was perfect.  I also love that it's pink!

A 4 mile run seemed like a great way to end my Arkansas trip.  I had to take advantage of the perfect weather and flat neighborhood.  It's funny that I ran more while on vacation then I probably would have ran at home. 

Well, now I have a FULL day of traveling ahead of me.  By the time we drive to the airport, I fly to Charlotte, sit in that airport for 2 hours, fly to Atlanta, and then take the shuttle back to Chattanooga...I could have just driven faster.  But, driving is more work.  Oh well, as long as I make it safely.

Michelle's Run 4.5.12

30 minute tempo run

Since I am running the Peachtree, it's time to get serious about the training.  I thought Spring Break would be the best time to try to get in the habit.  In taking my training more seriously, I have decided to dabble in tempo runs and speedwork.  Today I tried a tempo run.  I ran at normal pace for 10 minutes.  Then I picked up the pace for 5 minutes, then spent 5 minutes trying to run near my goal 10k pace.  The last 10 minutes were a cool down.  The goal is to increase the time that I can run at my goal pace.  I'm wanting to run the 10k in less than an hour! 

Next week I will try speedwork.... the trick there is finding a track or somewhere that would be conducive for speedwork.

I am in Arkansas.  I even got to stay with Mysti.  Unfortunately, we didn't get to actually run together.  But while she was at her dr's appt checking on the baby, I went for a 2 mile run.  Her neighborhood was sooo flat.  I loved it.  The temperature was also perfect.  Hopefully the next time we are together we can run together too!

Walking

One day the name of our blog will be true again. :)

However, John and I have walked about every other night for the last few weeks. Usually about 1.5 - 2 miles. I just have not been posting as the walks are really uneventfull.

Color Run 3.31.12

Yesterday I ran in the Color Run in Atlanta. 

You start with a white shirt and get this powder paint thrown on you at each Kilometer that you run.  It was an untimed race.  I didn't know why at first, but as soon as we got started I figured it out.  We had to slow down to a walk/stop before each paint point.  We tried to run quickly in between the points.  We joked that it was speedwork!

We had a great time and definitely ended up with a lot of paint on us!

Michelle's workout 3.28.12

Power Yoga
1 hour

I went to power yoga this past Wednesday (forgot to blog about it).  It went pretty well until I stretched a muscle in my back a little too far.  It was sore the next two days.  Luckily it was better by the Color Run!

Also, we found out this past week that we will be running the Atlanta Peachtree 10k July 4th! (We had to enter a lottery).  So on the Fourth of July we will be running 6.2 miles with 60,000 people in the Georgia heat!  I'm actually really excited to run in such a huge race!  The atmosphere is going to great.

It was a great day for a longer run.  I didn't have a to-do a mile long, I ate healthy for lunch, and although it was warm, there was a breeze.  I had to remind myself that it was ok to go slow and stop for water a few times.  It was a struggle at the very end, but I was happy that I was able to do it.

25 minute run

Since we had guests this week it was harder for me to get my runs in.  However, Thursday was great.  I got home at a decent time.  I was feeling a little tired so I laid down for a few minutes.  Then I got up and ran.  After my run I still had time to shower, fix dinner, eat, and go to our final dance class!  I'm a little sad the dance classes are over! 

I'm hoping to get a run in today (Saturday) since the weather is so nice.  We will see how the afternoon shapes up!

Power Yoga

My usual yoga friend decided to run instead, so it was tempting to bail myself.  However, I went and I am so glad that I did.  I sweated like crazy.  We did a lot of arm and ab work, so tomorrow may be interesting. 

This yoga class is not slow and restful, it's heated and quick moving.  However, we do take time to breath at the beginning and end.  In the beginning the instructor challenged us to think of a word to concentrate on when we were breathing in and another when we were breathing out.  I find mantras to be great for running, so I thought I would try it out for yoga.  I picked the words hope and strength.  I am hoping for some big things right now (or trying to stay hopeful and not defeated) and I'm wanting to get stronger in all areas of my life (mentally, physically, spiritually, etc).  They seemed like the perfect words and really helped me during hard poses.

The time may be a little mislead (ok, I know it is).  I know for a fact that my Ipod Nike+ is a little off.  According to that time my pace was 9:40.  In reality it was more like a pace of 10:44.  So, it's a lot closer to my goal then I have been running, but I still have plenty of room for improvement.

Michelle's run 3.10.12

I finally went for a run.  It's been too long.  What really motivated me was the fact that I have a 5k in 3 weeks that I am completely unprepared for.  Any get a sub 30 in less than 3 week plans out there? 

I haven't been posting my time/pace because it's been too embarrassing. 

I have figured out that training for a half marathon right now is just not do-able.  Maybe next year, but not this year.  My school is too demanding of my time.  Also, by the time I was trained up, it would be too hot and there wouldn't be in halfs to run in.  So, instead I am going to try to work on my pace.  I have decided as motivation to treat myself to a Kindle (not the color one, just the basic) if I have run a sub-30 minute 5k or a sub-60 minutes 10k.  I know that is easy to some people, but some reason my little legs just refuse to move that fast.  I also know that to get that fast I'm probably going to have to do 2 things:
1. Run more (duh!)
2. lose some weight

I just don't think my body can go that fast unless I lose some.  I don't know how that's going to look or if I will even do it, but it's just something I'm throwing around. 

I don't expect to reach that goal March 31st, but maybe later in the Spring.  I think I could have done it last year post-half marathon but the only 5k I ran was a brutally hilly course.

All that to say, I have some goals and some motivation to get there!

I did 20 minutes of OnDemand workouts tonight. 

School has been crazy, so I try not to have too high of expectations for myself as far as working out is concerned.  Hopefully next week will be a lot better.  Also, I now have a student teacher, so I'm hoping that helps with the workload some.

I ran 20 minutes yesterday afternoon.  I had Five Guys for lunch which wasn't the best running fuel, so by the end I wanted to puke!  However, I knew I needed to run since I was busy today.  I'm hoping I keep the running/exercising this week, but it's almost exhibit time which means work will be INSANE!  I may do yoga again, since I can do that at night.  (I usually only go every other week.)

Michelle's run 2.20.12

1.5 mile run

So in my mind I was going for 5 miles, yeah that didn't happen.  First, I went to the doctor this morning and got some not so fun news which is weighing on my mind.  Next, although the temp said barely 50 it was a lot warmer and I was over-dressed.  Then part of the little running loop was muddy from yesterday's rain which meant I was going to have to run around this little circle 10 times to get to 5 miles (which also meant I had to ran past my car every lap).  Finally, once I tried to run the whole loop and got mud all on my shoes....so I just gave in.  I was hot, thirsty, tired, and mentally not into it.  So, 1.5 miles was all I did.  I would say I feel bad about it, but I was already in a bad mood to start, so it didn't really change anything.  Maybe if I feel better I will do a workout video later today.

I didn't do much running this week (blame parent-teacher conferences), but that's ok.  This run was cold and windy...ick!  Since I don't have school tomorrow I'm hoping to get another run in. 

Also, we did have a ballroom dance lesson Thursday night, so that counts as some activity!

It was a cold run!  I actually had to put on my running tights.  I wasn't especially loving the run, but I made it.  I hadn't ran since last Monday because I took on a lot of home projects.  (painted two rooms and refinished a table).  This week is going to be crazy busy (parent-teacher conferences, babysitting, etc) so I'm just hoping to get a couple of runs in.

I was so proud that I got a 40 minute run in this afternoon!  I didn't know if I would even get a short run because I had to tutor some kids after school.  Then when I got home I thought about doing some house projects... but in the end I put my shoes on and stepped out the door.  I'm so glad that I did!

The Color Run

I just registered for my first race of 2012!

It's called The Color Run. You can check it out here.  My friend Stacee wanted to put a team together.  So, we are going to run 3.1 miles while getting paint thrown on us!  haha.

Michelle's run 1.30.12

I was in Atlanta for the last two night for work.  Yesterday after the conference my friend and I were determined to get a workout in.  So we headed to the hotel workout room.

I ran for 25 minutes and then walked for 10.  I wanted to run for 30, but it was pretty warm and stuffy in the room.  I'm happy that I got a workout in while I was away from home, that never seems to happen.

Mysti 1-29-2012

Well.....It has been a few months and with a new position at work and being prego my life has taken a crazy turn. I am at 25 weeks and have had a wonderful pregnancy thus far, minus some lower back struggles that made my doctor tell me at 6 weeks to stop running. However, with weekly chiropractic work and massages I've done great.
I am going to just start with what I have been doing: watching what I eat and stretching. I spent about 20 minutes today stretching - really helps my back. At this point, I have gained 5lbs throughout my first 5 months. However, I really need to pick the exercise back up to reach my goal of only gaining 15lbs.
So, I need ideas....

So, I'm so glad that it didn't snow afterall.  It was pouring down rain this morning and I figured that a run was completely out of the question.  However, the sun started shining this afternoon and it was perfect!  So I drove straight home after work and went for a 30 minute run.  I took Murray with me.  My ipod stopped working about halfway through, but it was fine.

I had good intentions of running, but the weather was blah!  So, today I did an OnDemand workout.  They took Jillian Michaels off and I think I'm just going to have to buy one, because I have not found a good replacement for her yet.  Her videos make you really work and not feel super silly.  All of the other ones have I done make me feel like an idiot.  So, I may be adding it to the grocery list for next week.  (Anyone else put non-food items on their grocery list?)

It's supposed to rain almost everyday this week too... ugh!  I just wish it would just SNOW!

Michelle's workout 1.18

workout: Power Yoga (1 hour and 15 minutes)

So today I took my 2nd yoga class.  I was a little nervous because I had worked all day and was afraid I wouldn't have enough energy to make it through. The yoga class that I go to is called "Power Yoga."  It's heated (95 degrees) and moves pretty quickly.  Let's just say I'm not a natural.  I try to stay with everyone, but a lot of my time is spent staring at other people and trying to do what they do.  I am easily the worst in the class.  I know yoga should not be competitive, but I say challenge accepted!

I'm sure I will get better with time.  As long as I'm enjoying it I'll keep going.  Also, one of my friend goes with me, so it adds some motivation/accountability.

p.s. Mysti there was a girl in my class that was at least 6 months pregnant. (Probably what you will look like at 9 months. :) )

Let's get this started again??

So, Mysti and I haven't been keeping up with the blog.  She has a good reason... (She's expecting her first baby).  I do not.  My new job is demanding and it's been really hard for me to find a work/life balance. (That's the best excuse I have.)

I need to get back to running and have tried several things that have not worked.  I'm thinking maybe blogging about it again will help. 

Since Mysti isn't blogging with me, I'm trying to decide if I should post on this blog again or just post on my other blog....  thoughts?

For today I will post here.  I ran 2.5 miles in 25 minutes this afternoon.  The weather was perfect.  It was upper 40s and sunny.  I loved every minute of the run.
